1. The Eiffel Tower
Probably one of the most recognisable monuments in the world, you’ll never forget your first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower. If you’re travelling to Paris for the first time, the Eiffel Tower is sure to be one of the stops on your sightseeing route. Here are a few facts about Paris’ most famous landmark. Built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in world at the time at 320 meters. It wasn’t until 1930 that the Chrysler Building in New York tipped it – and even then only by 18 meters!
Interesting fact: Around 50 tonnes of paint are added to the tower every year to protect it from rust.
2. The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is another famous monument known the world over. The tower serves as the freestanding bell tower of the cathedral of Pisa, and began to tilt during construction – which began way back in 1173. It’s basically tradition now to pose as if one was holding the tower up. It’s a famous site – a must-see on any trip to Italy.
3. The Sagrada Familia
The Sagrada Familia is another famous building that deserves attention – possibly more than all the others! Although incomplete, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you see it, it’s easier to understand why. Construction began in 1882, but once Antoni Gaudi got involved in 1883, there was no doubt that this would be a totally unique and utterly transfixing building. There is literally nothing else like it; it’s a work of art, an extraordinary take on gothic architecture. When Gaudi died in 1926, the basilica was only partially complete, and even now the estimated date of completion – according to the project’s information leaflet – is only in 2028! If you’re on a trip to Barcelona, this is an absolute must-see.
4. The Coliseum
Back to Italy now for a taste of Ancient Rome: The Coliseum! The largest amphitheatre in ancient Rome, the Coliseum could seat up to 50 000 people, who would gather for gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles. Built in around 70-72 AD, much of the structure still stands, a reminder of the might of the Roman Empire.
5. St Peter’s Basilica
Another famous site to explore is St Peter’s Basilica in The Vatican City, which is the most renowned work of Renaissance art in the world – and also one of the world’s largest churches. It’s the burial ground of Saint Peter, one of Jesus’ 12 apostles, and it is thought that his tomb is directly beneath the altar of the basilica. The site is unsurprisingly a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people every year. Originally built in the 4th Century by Emperor Constantine, the basilica underwent major repairs and radical changes over the years, designed and redesigned by several architects, including Michelangelo himself. The artworks, (including sculptures) niches, naves and other features will have history buffs fascinated.
