Greece has long been a top destination for travellers all over the world. Offering an exciting mix of old and new, Greece is just waiting to be explored! Greece offers ancient wonders, magnificent landscapes, delicious cuisine and vibrant culture. This is a country with something for everyone. Greece is home to both the mainland (there are 6 mainland regions that include Athens, Delphi, Olympia and Meteora) and over 6,000 islands! With so many places to see in Greece, it’s hard to pick a favourite spot. However, Expat Explore has put together a list of 5 top must-see locations in Greece!
Some of the most important ruins and sites in Europe and perhaps even the world can be found on the Greek mainland and islands. Not to mention the fascinating culture and traditions which have been well-preserved. Greek food is also one of the most popular and healthiest cuisines in the world thanks to its fresh, flavourful produce. On Greece holidays, look forward to Greek salads, tzatziki (yoghurt dip) and tiropira (layered pastry pie with feta filling).
Certain Greek islands offer perfect climates and clear blue water. Over spring and summer (mid-April to mid-June), islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Samos offer an amazing Greece beach holiday. This weather is perfect for outdoor activities. You can go snorkelling, windsurfing and sailing, hiking and sunbathing!
Here are the top 5 must-see locations in Greece:
1. The Acropolis, Athens
The Acropolis is an impressive symbol of Greece’s classical spirit and history. Acropolis in Greek means, “the highest point of the town”. Standing above the city, the large stone fortress dates back to the 5th century BC and was designed by Pericles. These monuments represent centuries of thought, art, philosophy and democracy. A definite highlight of Athens – we declare it a must-see!

2. Nafplion
One of Greece’s prettiest and most romantic places, Nafplion (also known as Nafplio) is a small and incredibly charming coastal city nestled beneath the towering Palamidi fortress. It was also the first capital of modern Greece. With its narrow streets, cafés, boutiques, stunning harbour and beautiful homes, Nafplion is a memorable stop on any tour of Greece!

3. Delphi
Lying on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Delphi was called the ‘navel of the earth’ by the Ancient Greeks and believed to be a spiritual focal point for all Greeks. Here, the Sanctuary of Apollo was built. According to classic Greek mythology, Apollo is the son of Zeus and the Greek god of music, art, poetry, archery, healing and prophecy. This makes Delphi one of the most important and fascinating archeological sites in Greece offering those who visit an incredible blend of gorgeous natural scenery, ancient history and mythical legend.

4. Meteora, Kalabaka
Another one of our favourite places in Greece is Meteora, known for its sheer cliff faces and the Greek Orthodox monasteries built at their summit. These eroded rocks are ancient, but they could be mistaken for the set of a modern science-fiction tale. It’s a strange and breathtaking landscape. Meteora is certainly one of the most unique UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the most awe-inspiring sites in all of Greece.

5. Santorini
Santorini was built on the rim of a caldera, a depression that forms when a volcano erupts. This island is well known for its ocean views, white-washed buildings with blue domes and the multi-coloured cliffs rising 300m out of the ocean. Santorini holidays are also full of art, wineries and some of the best cuisine in the Greek Islands on Santorini. Don’t miss the spectacular sunsets that the island is famous for!
