Solo Travel for Women: 7 of the safest European destinations

Solo travel is an incredible way to learn more about the world and yourself! However, safety is often a concern – especially for women travelling on their own. Understandably, this very real concern prevents many female travellers from setting off on their own. That’s why, in honour of International Women’s Day, Expat Explore has put together a list of the safest and best destinations in Europe for solo female travel.

These countries offer female travellers peace of mind and a sense of security with their low crime rates, peaceful environments and efforts to protect women. However, this is not the only reason women should visit these places. From beautiful nature and vibrant cities to friendly locals and fascinating history, these countries offer so much to those who visit.

These are Europe’s best destinations for solo female travellers:

1. Portugal

Home to stunning cities like Lisbon and Porto as well as the exceptional beaches of the Algarve and the rolling hills of the Douro Wine Valley, Portugal should be on everyone’s bucket list! Some of the things that make Portugal so accessible to female travellers are that English is widely spoken, public transport is frequent, affordable and efficient, and locals are known for their warm hospitality.

Being such a popular tourist destination, it is also easy to meet fellow travellers. Portugal is also notably more affordable than other top destinations in Europe. With a stable political environment and strong safety measures, Portugal is very safe to visit.

2. Ireland

A trip to the Emerald Isle is ideal for travellers who seek dramatic scenery, charming villages and a land full of fascinating myths and legends! Both Ireland and Northern Ireland have so much to offer, from the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Moher and the mysterious Giant’s Causeway to Dublin’s iconic pubs. With no language barriers for English speakers, Ireland is a popular destination for solo travellers from all over the world.

Ireland also ranks high on safety lists for travellers with the only warnings being for the occasional pickpocket and wild night out at the pub!

3. Iceland

Iceland has consistently been named one of the safest (if not the safest) countries in the world. With an exceptionally low crime rate, small population, strong equality laws and very high standard of living, solo female travellers can explore Iceland without having to worry about their safety or wellbeing. For outdoor enthusiasts, Iceland offers a wealth of beautiful sights from cascading waterfalls and natural hot springs to volcanoes, glaciers and the elusive Northern Lights!

However, Iceland is also one of the most expensive countries in the world, making it more of a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip than a spontaneous weekend getaway!

4. Croatia

Croatia is home to some truly spectacular scenery with its stunning coastline, crystal-clear waters and historic walled towns. It also has one of the most preferable climates with plenty of sunshine throughout the year. However, this means that Croatia can get very busy in summer with tourists flocking to coastal towns. Shoulder season is the perfect time to explore this Balkan country as it won’t be too hot or too busy.

While Croatia is very safe for the most part, there are some things to be aware of. Drivers and cyclists tend to be quite speedy and even aggressive at times. Be sure to always have your wits about you when crossing the street. Historic cities like Dubrovnik and Split are known for their charming old towns but beware that these can be a bit of a maze, especially at night!

5. Germany

Solo travellers are spoilt for choice when visiting Germany. Whether it’s a cultural experience, an unforgettable night out or breathtaking scenery you seek, Germany has you covered. Nature lovers will be in awe of the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley. While those seeking a party like no other simply have to visit Munich during Oktoberfest or experience an all-night rave in Berlin! History buffs will also be in their element in cities like Berlin, Dresden and Nuremberg.

Germany is also regarded as one of Europe’s safest countries and is well known for its efficient and easy-to-use public transport system. Travelling between German cities such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg is made simple with high-speed rail and affordable bus routes.

6. Slovenia

What Slovenia lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Being a small country also makes Slovenia much easier to navigate than many larger European cities. The capital, Ljubljana is known as the “City of Dragons” and offers no shortage of fairytale magic. Lake Bled is just a short drive away from the capital and offers sweeping views of the Julian Alps. It’s a great spot for a swim, boat ride or hike!

Slovenia consistently holds a spot in the top 10 most peaceful countries on the Global Peace Index. Violent crime is extremely rare and while the occasional petty theft can occur in cities, it is also very rare.

7. Spain

With its vibrant cities, stunning landscapes, delicious food and full-of-life locals, Spain has something to offer every type of traveller. As one of the most affordable countries in Western Europe, there are so many things to do in Spain that won’t break the bank. Of course, busy cities like Madrid and Barcelona are pricier than smaller cities or towns and, as they tend to be more crowded, it is important to be aware of pickpockets.

However, these cities are still more affordable than most other big European cities and, as long as you are cautious and aware of your surroundings, you’ll be perfectly fine!
