The Eiffel Tower: Happy 125th Anniversary!!

Eiffel tower in paris

On this day 125 years ago, the Eiffel Tower was officially opened at the Exposition Universelle World’s Fair. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and designed by Gustave Eiffel, the tower has come to symbolise Paris – and France as a whole – and is one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks.

Although it initially sparked a huge amount of controversy, the tower (which stands at 300 meters without its broadcast antennae) is now famous the world over.

Interesting facts: It took two years, two months and five days to build the tower. Although it was only intended to stand for 20 years, it’s now an inextricable part of the Parisian skyline. Drawing around 7 million visitors each year, it’s the most visited monument in the world.
