Known as ‘fairy chimneys’, the distinctive rock formations of Cappadocia are an incredible sight, with of the rocks having been carved from the inside to create buildings. In the region you’ll find ancient churches and homes, and some subterranean cities are as much as eight levels deep! Used by the early Christians to hide from persecutors, the underground cities also had a vast and intricate network of traps designed to catch the Romans – though there are no such dangers today!
