Travel is a great way to feel like we belong. Just by visiting a new place, you’re suddenly part of a special circle of people who have seen and experienced the same wonders of this world. So, it’s no secret that people then often seek out the same experiences as other travellers so they can also say they’ve had the privilege of ticking it off their bucket list. However, some destinations in the world are so popular, and the special circle so big, that these experiences are often deemed as cliché. Especially in today’s modern travel climate where the goal becomes to discover unique new places and gate keep them lest they also become over-visited.
Have you ever wondered, though, what makes these destinations “cliché”? Is it that they don’t live up to the hype? Are they not exclusive enough? Or is it simply that they inevitably become cliché after years of proving why they’re so worth the visit? Read on as Expat Explore unpacks what makes the world’s most cliche travel destinations worth the visit!
In the wise words of Taylor Swift, “Just because something is cliché doesn’t mean it’s not awesome!”
Take a look at what makes these cliché destinations worth the visit:
Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pisa, Italy
The number of tagged results on Instagram for the Tower of Pisa in Italy may lead some to believe that it is a cliché destination to visit. And yes, it certainly is a popular entry on many travel bucket lists. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the visit! Firstly, its sheer size is impressive to behold. Perhaps it’s the distance perspective images associated with this attraction that make its size misleading, but the Tower of Pisa stands at an impressive 56m on its tallest side and just shy of that on its shortest.
Not to mention the iconic lean that makes this tower unique! A crucial flaw in the foundation means that one side is shorter than the other, creating that 4-degree lean that you simply have to see for yourself. When was the last time you saw a building completed in 1372 lean but still stay upright?

The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
Unfortunately, the Eiffel Tower may have fallen victim to the clichéd romanticisation of Paris through overly simplified media portrayals over the years. However, the Eiffel Tower is still one of the most impressive things to see on a trip to France. Sure, you’ll include other attractions on your itinerary and even make some time to explore like the locals. But trust us, you’d regret not seeing the Eiffel Tower the moment you get onto the plane home.
Firstly, it’s truly more gigantic than most people even realise. Standing at a whopping 324 metres high, it’s even visible from many different locations across Paris for free! Once the tallest man-made structure in the world, it’s still impressive to consider that the grandeur and detail of the Eiffel Tower were all executed in the 19th century. And what’s more, the fact that it’s often visited and highly sought after means it’s also been witness to some iconic historic events. Be sure to visit this symbol of French culture and history at least once in your life!
