Coach travel is an incredible experience no matter which time of year. While summer offers fun activities and picture-perfect weather, there’s something special about seeing your favourite destinations covered in snow, glistening in the rain or contoured with overcast lighting. If you’re the type of traveller who enjoys crisp air while you travel and evenings snuggled up in a cosy hotel, winter is your time of year!
While witnessing winter wonderlands is a bucket list experience, it’s always best to be prepared. So, Expat Explore has rounded up our top tips to ensure your comfort while you travel to colder destinations or during winter, plus some perfect places for a white Christmas.
Take a look at our top winter travel tips:
Expect the unexpected
While the attractions and sights you’ll see in winter are spectacular, the weather conditions could result in delays or even cancellations (often for safety reasons). Tour guides and travel providers will do their best to ensure you see the sights on your wishlist but prepare for the possibility of circumstances beyond their control.
Always try to remember that, while you’re likely on a journey to tick off everything on your bucket list, staying in the moment and enjoying whatever you end up experiencing will be a lot more rewarding.
Layer a lot
Your winter trip is on the way and now it’s time to pack. But how do you prepare for the unpredictable weather? The answer is layering! By wearing a few light layers, and a coat, you can protect yourself from the elements while still being able to take off a layer or two if the sun makes a surprise appearance.
Try to keep the layers as light as possible. First of all, that’ll make packing a lot easier and help keep your luggage within the weight restrictions. Secondly, you don’t want to walk around your dream destinations with heavy clothes weighing you down.

Try to pace yourself
We know the excitement to see the world has been building up since you booked your trip. You should by no means sacrifice your excitement but taking it slow can offer even more opportunities to explore while also keeping you safe.
Remember that the weather can seriously impact the safety of sidewalks, crosswalks and walkways. When it’s raining or snowing, try to tread a little more carefully. This also counts for getting on and off your tour coach, as the steps may also become slippery from many sets of snowy feet using them. Also, try to listen to your body and mind. If you’re feeling drained, whether socially, mentally or physically, there’s nothing wrong with taking time to yourself to regroup. Even if it means missing out on an activity.

Stay hydrated
Our last winter road trip tip is arguably the most important. It’s easy to stay hydrated in warmer destinations or summertime since the sun will regularly remind you that you’re thirsty. But colder conditions can make one forget to drink enough liquids, especially if you’re preoccupied with seeing the sights.
That’s why it’s important to remind yourself to stay hydrated. If you have a favourite water bottle that you always use back home, consider taking it along on your trip. Alternatively, make sure to have enough coffee breaks while you explore. Try to have a glass of water with every hot or cold beverage you enjoy on your travels.
Now that you’re prepared to brave the colder climates in some of the world’s top destinations, take a look at our recommendations for the perfectly frosty festive season.
